diwali festival
the indian community here in the office is celebrating a festival called diwali.. an email was sent to the whole department informing us that they will be bringing some treats on monday.. with that i got a bit curious as to what the festival is.. and why they are eager to organize this small gathering on monday..
diwali is one of the most well known indian festivals.. it is well celebrated even amongst the indians outside of the main country (india).. it is colloquially known as the 'festival of lights'.. and this is because of the common practice to light small oil lamps and place them around the home.. in the urban areas, the candles are used to substitute the lamps.. among the nouveau riche, (hear this..) neon lights are made to substitute for candles.. hehehe.. =D
it is said that the festival signifies different things to different people throughout the world.. however, there is still a commonality.. it signifies the renewal of life.. and it is common to wear new clothes on the day of the festival.. (shopping time! hehehe.. =p) the celebration is accompanied by fireworks and the exchange of sweets..
